BIM in Infrastructure Construction

The primary objective of this research project is to analyze how the use of BIM beyond the design phase can positively influence the delivery of infrastructure projects. The plan is to analyze real-world, BIM-based construction projects regarding their efficiency, costs, and other performance parameters and compare them with traditional design and execution methods. Qualitative evaluation parameters will be established and, where possible, defined as concrete metrics to assess efficiency and quality. For example, the number and type of recorded construction defects in a project can be determined.

Using these parameters, real BIM projects will be analyzed during the construction phase—specifically within HOAI performance phases 5 through 8, which carry the greatest practical relevance for construction companies. Contractors from specialty planning, construction supervision, and the construction industry will be involved to compare these projects with traditionally planned ventures and to identify existing problems in BIM implementation. This comparative analysis aims to identify optimization opportunities and provide recommendations on how BIM should be utilized in construction execution in the future. The ultimate goal is to standardize the use of BIM in construction, make it more efficient, and accelerate the digitalization of the construction industry.
